Since most new mandolins require a proper setup (could cost another 70-100$), even if buying from the store. This KM-505 (A-style) is really the one to get. I have owned more than a dozen mandolins (buy one at a time, try it, did not like it, sell it, etc., keeping only two at present time) and I really know what to look for in a mandolin. The F-styles (Kentucky, Loar, Micheal Kelly and others cheap ones such as Ibanez.) do not sound that great. This one looks gorgeous and sound extremely good to my ears. I recently tried this mandolin in the store, along with about 10 other brands/models, 4 of them are Kentucky. Honest reviews on Kentucky Artist A-Model Mandolin Model KM-505 in Vintage AmberburstSorry to hear the bad reviews due to careless shipping. I put a strap on it, opened the Mandolin for Dummies book, and was soon strumming chords to songs just like I'd done to the guitar. Resonance in this level of instrument was not anticipated in an instrument several times this price, yes, but not at this price point. The sound waves are reinforcing themselves rather than partially cancelling themselves out. That usually indicates you have hit harmonic resonance with that piece of wood.
As I tuned each string to pitch I could hear the sound get much louder as the tuner indicated the string was now at proper pitch. It is a nicely made instrument with decent craftsmanship.Īfter opening the box, I had to tune the strings to proper pitch by using a chromatic tuner I'd borrowed from my guitar case. It is touted as having a hand carved, solid wood top as opposed to other lower models that just had a solid wood top. This is the bottom of the upper level of mandolins. The recommendations said Kentucky makes 2 levels of mandolins, the basic level and the better level. I bought it used for about half of what a new one would cost and it arrived already setup. I love playing it sounds great and will be around for a long time.īest Deals for Kentucky Artist A-Model Mandolin Model KM-505 in Vintage AmberburstI was a first time mandolin buyer and prefer to purchase a used, better quality unit that would serve my needs and still retain some retail value.Īfter reading many ideas at the mandolin cafe, I settled upon the highly recommended Kentucky 505, A style mandolin. The KM-505 had potential and Kenny brought it out. He had for a week and a half and when he was done I ended up with a very fine instrument. I took it to my guitar tech and now mandolin tech as well, His name is Kenny Marshall at Audio Light and Music in Norfolk VA.

I thought about sending it back, But I thought it might just need a pro set up. But the open strings sounded pretty good. The KM-505's neck was so bad that it was unplayable.
I have been playing and teaching guitar for 37 years and basic set ups are pretty easy. It needed to be set up, like all new instruments.

I bought the same mandolin from the 'mandolin store' online, and it arrived in a free hardshell case.Īgain, amazon is carrying a lovely instrument, however I do not reccomend buying it from this store.Ĭlick Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews > The mandolin arrived from musicians friend in good shape. While I do not at all blame amazon for my mandolin arriving destroyed, it was completely improper packaging for a 400$ instrument. I had to send it back, and was very dissapointed to see the UPS had crushed the box (and even ripped a hole in it). My reasons:ġ) It comes unassembledand personally I don't want to pay someone to set it up after I've had to pay for the entire instrumentĢ) It is packaged in simply a box and a tiny thin wrapping of foamīasically, my instrument arrived with the neck snapped, and the strings coiling off it. Even though the mandolin is a 100 star, I had to rate it a 3 because I would not reccomend buying it from amazon.
